Sámi Reindeer Herders released

Ingebretsen’s Scandinavian Store in Minneapolis, MN hosted the North American release event for the book Sámi Reindeer Herders in Alaska: Letters from America1937 (2014), on December 7, 2013. This is the English language version of Sámit bálvalusas Alaskas (2009). The release was part of the annual Sámi Culture Day, co-hosted by the store and the Sámi Siida of North America. The culture day is an annual event, and is held the first Saturday of December. Anessa Andersland, the North American Marketing Agent for ČállidLágádus/Authors’ Publisher and John Edward Xavier, Chair of the Sámi Siida of North America, gave a presentation on the book. Xavier is the descendant of the Reverend Nils Paul (Tornensis) Xavier from Kautokeino, a well-known immigrant from Kautokeino who is represented in the book. The event was well attended and generated lively discussion on the topics of Sámi immigration and Sámi culture and had a fair amount of sales considering that the book encountered printing delays so the audience had to purchase the book "pre-sale.” The Sámi Siida of North America also had local Sámi Americans on hand to answer guest questions before and after the presentation.

The book was also one of the subjects of a presentation on Sámi culture and immigration at St. Olaf College as part a lecture series titled: 1814-2014: Celebrating 200 Years of Norwegian Democracy. Their talk can be seen here:

Other events are in the works for New York City, Alaska, the Puget Sound area, and the Midwest.
